A group of Girardeans left early Nov. 13, 1966, for a flight to Boston, Mass., to present Cape Girardeau's case before the All-America City jury. Here Ken Hayden, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Community Development Committee, left, and DuNard Cooper, development committee member, loaded one of the two heavy cases containing the city's All-America City exhibit into the trunk of a car for transport to Lambert Field in St. Louis. While the total proceeds failed to come up to expectations, these men of Headquarters Co., 140th Infantry, deserved a big E for effort as the National Guard took over the United Fund's (now United Way) porchlight campaign. They were shown in the photo getting their final instructions from the company commander, Capt. Vinson Rueseler. (G.D. Fronabarger ~ Southeast Missourian archive)

These 13 youths from Southeast Missouri were shown before boarding a bus for a trip to St. Louis where they underwent examinations preliminary to their enlisted 4-year Navy careers. Those passing the exams were to be sent either to Great Lakes Naval Training Station, or the station at San Diego, Calif. All were enlisted by the local Navy recruiting office. In the group were, from the left, standing, Chief Jack Finch of the local recruiting office; Zed Cawthon, Cape; Charles Nenninger, Perryville; Leslie Case, Bloomfield; Bruce West, Lutesville; Arthur Poorman, Commerce; Roy Simmons, Commerce, and Edward Mallett, Delta; kneeling, Darwin Mattingly, Wayne Zoellner, Darrell Campbell and Joseph Laws, Perryville; Cecil Baker, Allenville; Neil McClard, Jackson, and Chief Dan Turner of the recruiting staff.
