Published March 6, 1979. Horace Greeley said it: "Go West, young man," and that's the advice this determined boxer seems to be following. Or at least trying to. The dog, Briggs, didn't actually bend the parking meter pole, but his undaunted spirit and the pole's position caused many startled motorists passing by the 1000 block of Broadway to do double takes nevertheless. Published June 3, 1987. A balloon release on the steps of the Common Pleas Courthouse was part of the filming Tuesday of a video for the Cape Girardeau Tourism Bureau. In the foreground, the director, Judy Lee Mayer of St. Louis, instructs the participants on the appropriate motion for the shot. About 250 people participated in the filming. Published April 29, 1987. Motorists Tuesday had an unusual roadway companion as a house traveled the streets of Cape Girardeau. The home was being moved from the 1400 block of North Kingshighway to North Main Street by Johnson Moving Company of Sikeston. Here the house with its police escort travels down Bertling Street. Police said when workers weren't clearing trees from the path, the house could travel up to 10 mph. The entire trip took about two and a half hours. Published Feb. 20, 1987. The winner of the local playwright competition, Kathy Davenport, will present her play "A Little Bit of Magic" this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Concord Theatre. Published April 2, 1987. Charlene Peyton teaches music at Hawthorn School in Cape Girardeau. She began her teaching career in England on an Air Force base. She returned to Cape Girardeau in 1976 when her husband retired from the Air Force. Published Oct. 11, 1969. This morning's torrential rains made a virtual lake of the Broadway-Caruthers intersection, making it ideal for -- what else -- an impromptu game of touch football. The boys shown here are from left, John Wright, Brad Ashby and David Faircloth.
