CHAFFEE -- Already, with only three days into the filing period for the City of Chaffee's April election, a three-way race has developed for the mayor's seat.

Chaffee Mayor Ron Moyers has filed for re-election, but one of the candidates taking him on is former mayor Robert Capshaw, whom Moyers defeated in April 1987 for the seat. Moyers beat Capshaw by 549 votes to 351, or a margin of 198.

The third candidate to file for the seat is Bill Goad of 324 West Parker.

The seat carries a four-year term. Like other city seats up for election, it will be voted on April 2.

By late Friday afternoon councilmen Bill Cannon, of Ward 1, and Ed Gauthier, of Ward 2, were the only other candidates to file for city seats up for election, according to City Clerk Diane Eftink. They are running for re-election to two-year terms.

Also up for election are the two-year council seats now held by Tom Cunningham, of Ward 4, and Marcus Lauck, of Ward 3.

Elsewhere, only one candidate had filed for the April 2 election to the Scott County R-2 Board of Education as of late Friday afternoon, said a district spokesperson. She said the candidate is board President Larry Myer. Myer is seeking re-election to a three-year term.

Another three-year school board seat is also up for election: that held by Dale Tierney. In addition the three-year unexpired term of former board member James Dooley must also be filled.

Dooley, 40, died in October in a farming accident. One year remains on his term, said the district spokesperson.

Meyr was the only candidate from either the school or city elections who could be reached for comment Saturday.

The 46-year-old Meyr said he had no one specific reason for wanting to be re-elected. "I'm just interested in providing the best education for the kids in our community."

Since he has served on the school board, he said, the district has built a new high school and constructed an addition to the grade school. Now the district's third phase in its construction plan is coming up and Meyr said he wants to see it through as a board member.

That third phase deals with replacing the district's manual arts building next to the high school, Meyr said. The district will probably begin the project's planning phase in the next two or three years, he said.

Meyr, a farmer who raises cattle and grain, said the experience he already has with the school board makes him a proper candidate. His length of time as a board member was unavailable Saturday.

He holds both bachelor's and master's degrees from Southeast Missouri State University in the area of industrial and technical education, he said.

Meyr lives at Route 2, Box 18, Chaffee, with his wife, Judith, and their family. They have children 15, 13, and 10 years of age.

The filing period for the city election ends Jan. 29; candidates for the school board may file until Jan. 28.
