It is no wonder Laurel Adkisson was recently chosen one of the 1996 Ten Outstanding Young Missourians by the Missouri Jaycees: She has a good track record for volunteering and knows how to develop leadership potential in others.

Adkisson, who works as a financial services officer with Commerce Bank, was nominated for the award by Matt Hopkins and the Cape Girardeau Jaycees.

She received the award at the 23rd annual Congress of Ten Outstanding Young Missourians and Missouri Jaycees winter board meeting earlier this month.

The Ten Outstanding Young Missourians award is given to residents based on achievement in the areas of personal improvement, financial success, social improvements, philanthropic contributions or voluntary service, political or government service, scientific contributions, legal reform, cultural improvements and leadership accomplishments.

In 1991, she developed the Holiday of Lights decorations contest and bus tour and the River Heritage Calendar of Events to highlight regional tourism. She also has served on the American Heart Association board and the American Cancer Society Gala committee.

In 1992, she chaired the March of Dimes WalkAmerica team at Commerce Bank and raised almost $15,000 for the organization. She co-chaired the event last year.
