Twenty-one students from the Cape Girardeau Vocational Technical School earned 23 medals at the District VICA competition March 4 at Arcadia Valley.
They will advance next month to state competition for the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. Among the outstanding local performers was Brendan O'Grady, who won three gold medals during the competition.
Placing in the skills tests were:
Air conditioning and refrigeration -- Norman Brant, Mike Forbes and Pat Kirchhoff, first through third.
Carpentry -- Billy Cobb, first.
Technical Drafting -- Will Barnes, Bruce Suchman and Jacob Travis, first through third.
Residential Wiring -- Josh Penfield, first; and Eric Steigemeyer, third.
Welding -- Kenny Foor, third.
Postsecondary Welding -- Joe McElvain, first.
Architectural Drafting -- Brendan O'Grady, D.J. Mansfield and Travis Estes, first through third.
Placing in the written tests were:
Air Conditioning -- Norman Brant, first.
Drafting -- Brendan O'Grady, first; and D.J. Mansfield and Kerensa Uhlig, tied for second.
Collision Repair Tech -- John Hill, first.
Carpentry -- Billy Cobb, first.
Residential Wiring -- Eric Steigemeyer, second; and Josh Penfield, third.
Electronics -- Lonny Gibbons, third.
Four Cape Girardeau students also earned honorary first-place medals for their performance in the quiz bowl: D.J. Mansfield, Terra Wright, Amy Marr and Brendan O'Grady.
