Two youths from Cape Girardeau County have recently completed summer internships on Capitol Hill with U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson.
Intern Jane Thorpe currently is seeking an undergraduate degree in history from Princeton University in Princeton, N.J., before attending law school. She is a 1991 graduate from Cape Girardeau Central High School, and is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Thorpe of Cape Girardeau.
Intern Steve Hamilton currently is seeking an undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Missouri-Columbia before attending law school. He is a 1990 graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School, and is the son of Tom and Martha Hamilton of Cape Girardeau.
"Congressional internships provide youth the opportunity to see first-hand their federal government in action," said Emerson. "By spending a few weeks in and around the capitol complex, interns learn how a congressional office functions as well as how our democratic system of government works. I hope Jane and Steve found this an absorptive experience which they'll remember for years to come."
