Next school year junior-high journalism students all over the country will open up their textbooks and see examples from Cape Girardeau students.
Former members of The Paw staff at Schultz Middle School recently had their work published in the new edition of "Junior High Journalism," which was just released by The Rosen Publishing Group.
"We just found out a couple of weeks ago when the school librarian brought me a copy of the book, with lots of pages marked," said Pat Heckert, newspaper adviser for Schultz. "I was very surprised to have so many included in the book. I saw page after page of Paw things."
The textbook for newspaper and yearbook staffs contain examples of outstanding artwork, articles and photography from junior-high publications around the country.
"As far as junior-high journalism goes, this is the best textbook," Heckert said.
The examples of the Paw staffers' news and sports articles, editorials, columns, features, artwork, cartoons and layout designs will serve as models for junior-high classes that use the nationally-recognized text.
The author of the textbook, Homer L. Hall from Kirkwood High School in Missouri, is an award-winning journalism teacher. His reprintings of the Paw selections credit each writer and artist as well as their school, and points out why their selections are presented as outstanding models.
Cape Girardeau students who are featured in the new text are Eric Bowman, Laura Brown, Adam Davis, Amanda Diamond, Jeremy Freeman, Elizabeth Green, David Haycraft, John Hearnes, Justin Heckert, Matt Jones, Betsy Martin, Jamie Pekios, Melissa Renard, Stephanie Slaten, Chris Thompson, Vicki Ventrella and Teresa Welker.
