Cape school officials to interview 5 people seeking to fill board spot

The Cape Girardeau School Board will meet today to begin the two-day process of filling an open spot within its ranks.

Five people applied and will be interviewed during a 6 p.m. meeting at district administrative offices, 301 N. Clark Ave. Don Call, David Goncher, Jerrie Heisserer, Deneke' Murphy and Jerry Siemers will vie for the open position.

Siemers, Murphy and Heisserer have served on committees and school organizations as parents. Call, a Cape Girardeau native and former superintendent in southwestern Missouri, ran during the April school board election. Goncher previously served on the board for four and a half years before resigning in 2001.

The board will meet again at noon Wednesday to cast votes and choose the replacement. The interview and vote are done in separate meetings, according to district policy.

The replacement will serve the remainder of Dr. Steve Trautwein's term, which ends in April. Trautwein resigned from the board in April because he is moving out of state. He served on the board for nine and a half years.
