The Cape Girardeau Police Department has implemented a free bicycle registration program to help simplify returning a stolen bicycle to its owner.
Bicycles can be registered with the department from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday by contacting a community service officer and setting up an appointment.
Those who wish to register bicycles need to bring identification and the bicycle to the department. An officer enters the information into a bicycle registration database and places a sticker with a registration number on the bicycle. To speed the process, people are encouraged to print and bring with them a completed registration form, available at cityofcapegirardeau.org//Police/Bicycle-Registration-Program.aspx.
Community service officers may be reached at 339-6621, extension 1271, to set up an appointment.
If a registered bicycle is stolen, the resident may contact Cape Girardeau police and provide their name and bicycle registration number, giving the officer sufficient information to complete necessary reports. If the bicycle is found, the department will notify the owner to retrieve it. Retrieved bicycles for which the owner cannot be determined are entered into "found property" and sold in an annual city auction.
