Sgt. Rodney Barker of the Cape Girardeau Police Department said the officer was treated and released from the hospital. Sgt. Jason Selzer released the officer's identity Friday morning -- Patrolman Jason Jurgens, who has been employed with the department since June 2001.

Jurgens was directing traffic in the southbound lane of Mount Auburn Road at William Street, Barker said. At about 6:30 p.m. a car accidentally hit him while turning left from the northbound land, he said. Jurgens was directing traffic at the scene of an accident when the incident occurred.
