A Cape Girardeau man died Thursday night at a Cape Girardeau hospital from what police said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He died at 8:54 p.m., according to Cape County Coroner John Carpenter.
Police spokesman Sgt. Carl Kinnison said the 22-year-old man was found on the steps of the Riverfront Park, behind the river floodwall at about 3 a.m. Thursday. The officer said a passerby heard a noise behind the floodwall and investigated, and then called police.
Kinnison said a .22 caliber derringer was found next to the man. The native of Festus lived in Cape Girardeau.
