A man accused of dragging his girlfriend from a car in front of his mother's house was charged Tuesday with misdemeanor assault.

Gregory L. Nicholson, 34, of 100 S. West End Blvd., was being held Wednesday evening at the Cape Girardeau County Jail. To be released, he must post a $3,500 cash bond.

Yolanda Ray told Cape Girardeau police that she was sitting with Nicholson in the car when a fight began, patrolman Jason Selzer said. She said she sat on top of Nicholson so he would not hit her, then engaged in a scuffle where she kicked him in the face, Selzer said.

Nicholson dragged her from the car, Ray told police, then slammed her head against the ground, pushed her into a fence and knocked her down.

If Nicholson posts bond, he won't be allowed to contact Ray or be within 500 feet of her, according to court documents.

No court date has been set.
