CAPE MAN CHARGED IN ASSAULT OF WOMAN

A Cape Girardeau man accused of robbing, sodomizing and assaulting a woman in the wee hours of Saturday morning remained in the Cape Girardeau County Jail on $100,000 bond late Monday.

Stephan L. Hempstead, 20, made a court appearance on Monday, and his preliminary hearing on the charges was set for May 16.

Cpl. Rick Schmidt with the Cape Girardeau Police Department said Hempstead's alleged victim, who is in her 30s, knew him by sight, although she didn't know his name.

Hempstead reportedly approached her on the street, dragged her into an alley off the 200 block of South Lorimier Street, took her money and forced her to have anal sex while choking and beating her.

She went to the police, who arrested Hempstead at his Ranney Avenue home on Sunday.
