Cape man arrested for assault after flagging down police

A 48-year-old Cape Girardeau man who flagged down police was later arrested for allegedly assaulting a man in his home and then struggling with police, said Cape Girardeau police Sgt. Jason Selzer.

Lee Williams was being held Tuesday in the Cape Girardeau County Jail on $5,000 cash-only bond. He is charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, third-degree assault and first-degree trespassing, jail records said.

About 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Williams flagged down a police officer in the 400 block of South Pacific Street and told the officer he'd been involved in a fight with another man, Selzer said.

The other man told police during the investigation that he responded to a knock on his apartment door. When he opened the door, Williams punched him in the face, knocking him back into the apartment, and then entered. The men struggled and the victim's 9-month-old child was knocked to the floor, Selzer said. A witness corroborated the victim's story, Selzer said.

Neither the apartment resident nor his child required medical attention, Selzer said.

Police arrested Williams, and, while being booked at the police station, Williams became combative and grabbed an officer by his gun belt and tried to take him to the ground, Selzer said. An officer stunned Williams with a Taser, at which time Williams stopped resisting, Selzer said.
