Spain is the destination of Thursday's Travelogue series at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Dr. Pamela Brakhage, associate professor of foreign languages at Southeast Missouri State University, will talk about her travels.

The monthly programs, which are free and open to the public, feature local speakers who have visited interesting places in the world.

"I love the history of Spain, and the way the religion and the culture work together," Brakhage said. "It's so neat to see the things I've read about and studied.

"My area of expertise is 16th and 17th century Spain, which was the golden age of Spain. Most of the slides will deal with that time period."

On her two trips to Spain, she has visited Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Avila, Segovia, Granada and Cordoba.

"I really enjoyed those trips," Brakhage said. "I love Spain, although I'm interested in mostly the central and southern portions."

Brakhage said she hasn't visited Spain for more than a year. But she's planning a three-week trip to Spain for the summer of 1993, which is open to college students and the public.

"I'm hoping to use this opportunity at the library to recruit people," she said. "Preliminary information will be given, and I hope everyone in the audience will want to sign up for next year's trip to Spain."

She said Southeast students can receive up to three hours of undergraduate or graduate credit for the trip to Spain through the departments of secondary education, foreign language or anthropology.

The cost is about $3,000, including the flight, Brakhage said, although this amount is still under negotiation.

She is also planning a two-week trip to Mexico July 23, which is open to college students and the public. The cost is $930, plus the flight expenses, she said.

Brakhage said she has been out of the country eight times, and seven of those trips have been with students.

"Students and community members go on the trips every year," she said, "which leads me to believe there is a lot of interest in Cape Girardeau."

Dr. Dan B. Cotner, who helps recruit speakers for the Travelogue series, said several programs are scheduled for the remainder of the year.

On Aug. 20, Ann Swanson will speak about her trip to New Zealand. Dr. and Mrs. Mangho Ahuja will discuss their trip to India on Sept. 17.

A program by Warren Meyer on his visit to the Pyramids of Egypt is scheduled Nov. 19.

Elsie and John Miller will discuss their trip to Saudi Arabia on Jan. 21.
