Cape Girardeau woman charged with manslaughter

A Cape Girardeau woman was charged with manslaughter Friday after another woman was hit by a vehicle and killed.

Angelia J. Hanson, 29, 612 N. Fountain St., was charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter by the Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney's Office after she allegedly ran over her lover and killed her.

In a probable-cause statement, Cape Girardeau Police Department patrolman David Templeton said evidence showed Hanson backed a Dodge Durango over Jody L. Lane, 43, outside their home at 612 N. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau.

Hanson told police she accidentally ran over Lane, with whom she was in a romantic relationship, after an argument between the two as the couple was getting ready to go to work. Police received a call at 7:51 a.m. of a woman who was struck by a car near the intersection of Fountain and Mill streets.

Lane was pronounced dead a short time later at Saint Francis Medical Center.

Templeton wrote in his statement that Hanson was upset and holding Lane when he arrived on the scene; Lane was unresponsive.

During an interview, Hanson told patrolman David Valentine the couple got into an argument while leaving for work. Lane originally was driving, but pulled back into the driveway and handed the keys to Hanson, who then climbed into the driver's seat and quickly backed up, the statement said.

Hanson, who has a suspended driver's license, believed she hit a curb as she backed out of the driveway in anger, according to the statement, but saw Lane lying in the road in her rearview mirror as she started to drive away. She stopped and ran to Lane, screaming for help, Hanson told police.

Templeton wrote the Durango dragged Lane underneath it and into the street after hitting her while Hanson was backing up. Lane was hit a second time when Hanson drove forward, Templeton wrote.

Bond for Hanson was set at $100,000. Hanson was charged with a class B felony for being a prior and persistent offender. According to the arrest warrant, Hanson has previous felony convictions for assaulting a law enforcement officer in 2005 and felony drug possession in 2011.

In April, she pleaded guilty to misdemeanors of making a false report and driving without a license. Hanson served 30 days in jail and paid a $50 fine.

No lawyer was listed for Hanson in online court records Friday.
