The Cape Girardeau Fire Department and city water division will be testing fire hydrants this week as part of a maintenance program.
The program is necessary for the city to meet its Insurance Services Office requirements.
There are 1,642 hydrants in the city's water system and 300 of them have been installed since 1992. The testing will take several weeks and some hydrants will be added and water mains replaced.
Because of the large water flow needed for these tests, some sediment might be stirred up and residential water could appear cloudy. The discoloration poses no health risks, city officials said.
