The City of Cape Girardeau announced today that it's making sandbags and sand available for city residents in anticipation of Monday's flood crest.
The Mississippi River is expected to crest at 41.5 feet at Cape Girardeau Monday morning. At 2 p.m. today the river was at 40.59 feet and rising. Flood stage is 32 feet.
At 41.5 feet, the Mississippi River will have little impact to Cape Girardeau. But according to its news release, the city is still taking precautions. Sandbags will be available at Fire Station No. 1, 1 S. Sprigg St., and sand is available in front of the Red House Interpretive Center downtown.
Cape Girardeau County announced today in a news release that no volunteers are needed to help with flood control.
From the news release: "Barring a drastic change in the forecasted river crest, we believe that the situation can be controlled by staff currently assigned to this event. Individuals wishing to volunteer should consider the St. Louis area, as they have been directly affected by the floodwaters."
