Cape Girardeau officials are entering into a contract with a private developer to use $400,000 in state grant funds to rehab a historic building on Broadway for commercial use.
The city will allow developer Kenny Pincksten to use $386,000 -- which is minus the $14,000 for grant administration -- for a total $1 million rehabilitation project for the two buildings at 635 and 637 Broadway. The buildings sit on the southeast corner of Broadway and Sprigg Street. In January a building at 633 Broadway which was attached to those still standing was demolished because its structural integrity was compromised.
This will represent the first project for downtown where Community Development Block Grant funds are used in partnership with a private developer to rehabilitate a commercial property.
The state requirements call for a deadline -- Pincksten will have 45 days to submit a complete set of plans and specifications for city review and 15 months to "substantially rehabilitate" the buildings.
