The Cape Girardeau County Commission appointed a new member to the Cape County Board for Developmentally Disabled at Monday's meeting. Jeff Baer was appointed to the seat vacated by Robert Landgraf's resignation earlier this year. Baer's appointment will begin immediately and is scheduled to end June 30, 2012.

The appointment was agreed upon by Presiding Commissioner Gerald Jones and Commissioner Jay Purcell. Commissioner Paul Koeper abstained from voting because Baer is his wife's first cousin.

The commission also heard a presentation about a potential limestone quarry in the north part of the county. Steve Overmann and Richard Hurst of Heartland Materials said they would like to operate a quarry southeast of Interstate 55 near Saxony Lutheran High School. They are in the preliminary stages but have formed a corporation and met with the Missouri Department of Transportation about the road leading to the site. They are currently trying to obtain the property and the necessary permits. Overmann and Hurst plan on meeting with a variety of local groups, including Saxony Lutheran High School officials, to discuss their plans. There was no estimate of when any of this would take place.

No action was required of the commission, but Overmann and Hurst said they wanted to inform them, and the public, of their plans. They said the quarry would employ about six people and have a life span of 75 to 100 years.
