Cape Girardeau is getting $223,600 in state grant money to pay to build sidewalks, make American with Disabilities Act improvements and to pay for sign and crosswalk work. The Missouri Department of Transportation's "Safe Routes to School" advisory committee named the recipients of the 16 infrastructure Friday that total $3.4 million to communities across the state. Safe Routes to School is a program of the Federal Highway Administration created in 2005. The state's transportation department administers the program that is designed to enable and encourage children to walk, wheel and bicycle to school and to facilitate planning that will improve safety and reduce traffic.
