WICHITA, Kan. -- A Cape Girardeau couple are in stable condition at a Kansas hospital after their motorcycle vacation was cut short by a head-on collision with a van last week.

Dr. Christopher Jung and his wife, Myra, were traveling on the second morning of their planned weeklong road trip when a van crossed a highway center line and struck the couple on their Honda Goldwing motorcycle, according to Myra Jung's brother, Owen Brady. The Jungs are being treated at Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita.

"Both of them are considered in stable condition and are recovering quickly," Brady said. "They have come out of their fourth or fifth surgeries already. ... It's going to be a long recovery."

Myra Jung suffered multiple broken bones, but her left leg was most seriously injured. However, doctors told the family she likely won't face amputation, Brady said. Both of the Jungs received internal injuries.

"God's really blessed us with keeping them alive," he said. "Myra was thrown 60 to 65 feet and bounced across the ground, with rocks, dirt and gravel embedded in her skin. Doc skidded across the pavement and was ate up that way. ... In the first 36 hours after the accident, the doctors thought they may lose both of them, but now they're really recovering."

Brady credits the construction of the heavy-duty Honda motorcycle with saving his sister's and brother-in-law's lives.
