Cape County to seek grant to preserve Common Pleas Courthouse

The Cape Girardeau County Commission decided Monday the county will pursue a historic preservation grant available through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to support repairs to the Common Pleas Courthouse in Cape Girardeau.

A total of $100,000 in grants will be awarded for fiscal year 2012 and are only open to counties that have a courthouse listed in the National Register of Historic Places within a community that has been designated by the National Park Service as a Certified Local Government, or CLG. The city of Cape Girardeau is a CLG and the Common Pleas Courthouse is listed on the national register. There is already a plan in place to reroof the courthouse and the grant would potentially provide for additional renovations, such as painting.

The deadline for the grant application is July 31.

Commissioners reviewed an application to the Missouri Public Service Commission by SEMO Communications Inc. of Sikeston, Mo., which intends to expand existing service in Cape Girardeau County, Mississippi County and Scott County. SEMO Communications provides digital cable, Internet and phone service to portions of Cape Girardeau, Mississippi, New Madrid, Scott and Stoddard counties.
