Safety concerns and the benefits of proximity to other government offices were presented by Cape Girardeau County Public Administrator Phyllis Schwab in her request to relocate her home office to a recently acquired property at 120 E. Washington St. in Jackson.

The Cape Girardeau County Commission approved the move Thursday morning and noted that the property will need winterizing.

County commissioners also approved a request from the highway department to hard-surface a half-mile section of County Road 249 from Highway 25 to County Road 250 and to advertise for bids to pave County Road 525 from County Road 553 to County Road 532.

Protecting the backs of county parks workers was the main factor in selection of a SCAG zero-turn, full-suspension mower from SEMO Motorsports and Lawn Equipment to replace current equipment at a cost of $310.50 above trade-in. The purchase was authorized by the commission.

A motion was passed to hold a free flu shot clinic for Cape Girardeau County employees from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 17 in the County Administration Building and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Common Pleas Courthouse Annex. After that date, employees can visit the public health department to be vaccinated. State employees may participate in the flu clinic for $20.

In a motion not on the agenda, Judy Beussink was named employer delegate to LAGERS, the Local Government Employees Retirement System. An employee delegate will also be named.

In routine business, a Missouri Department of Transportation technical advisory on fracture-critical bridges issued by the Federal Highway Administration recommended inspection of two county bridges for possible deficiencies, one on Cape Rock Drive built in 1993 and one on County Road 238 built in 1980.

Fracture-critical bridges are those designed in such a way that if one component on the bridge fails, it could cause the failure of the entire span. With some other types of bridge design, the failure of one component doesn't necessarily mean the entire span fails.
