Cape Girardeau County Commissioners issued a restricted burn order effective Monday, due to high temperatures, low humidity, dry ground covering, the possibility of increasing winds and lack of foreseeable precipitation.
All residents should postpone open outdoor burning, including agricultural field fires and wood lot fires until the fire danger decreases.
The order encourages people to properly discard smoking materials because grass along the highways is extremely dry and could ignite. Campers and hunters are asked to be extremely careful as well.
Regarding the upcoming Independence Day holiday, Presiding Commissioner Clint Tracy said the order does not legally affect fireworks activity "but common sense says it should."
