Cape Girardeau City Councilman Doug Richards made the decision to jump into the race for the District 2 Cape Girardeau County Commission seat upon realizing he wanted a new challenge.
"I've enjoyed the time I spent working on the city council and feel that the time is right to go after a new challenge," said Richards before Monday night's city council meeting.
"I thought it was a rewarding experience on the Cape City Council, certainly one that I'll never forget. But now it's time for someone else to take my place and for me to move on to something new," said Richards, 38, who is also public safety director of Southeast Missouri State University.
"I think the work that has already been done in the county has been excellent and paves the way for even more good things to take place in the future," added Richards, who was elected to the council in 1990.
"Cape County is making a strong move toward progress and growth and I would very much like to be a part of that."
Richards indicated the experience of working on the city council should help him on the county commission.
He intends to file for office in Jackson today.
