A plan to license electricians remains on hold after the Cape Girardeau City Council voted 4-3 Monday night to table the matter until November.
Councilman Richard Eggimann moved to table it, saying the council shouldn't decide such an issue without input of the new city manager.
The council hopes to hire a new city manager soon to replace J. Ronald Fischer, who is retiring.
Fischer's last day is Thursday. Monday marked the final council meeting for both Fischer and City Attorney Warren Wells. Wells is leaving to take a job with Northeast Missouri State University.
Eggimann and Councilman Jack Rickard oppose a measure that would require electricians to pass a written test to obtain a license.
Both Councilmen Melvin Gateley and J.J. Williamson joined Eggimann and Rickard in tabling the matter. Mayor Al Spradling III and councilmen Tom Neumeyer and Melvin Kasten voted against delaying the issue.
