Adam Thieret, an English teacher at Cape Girardeau Central High School, has been selected as one of two Outstanding Beginning Teachers from Southeast Missouri State University.
The award is given every two years by the Missouri Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and each education preparation program in Missouri was given an opportunity to nominate two beginning teachers.
The award requires a faculty and P-12 administrator nomination.
Thieret, 22, was nominated by high school principal Mike Cowan and Southeast instructor Christine Warren.
A letter to Thieret from the university states, "Your faculty nomination letter noted your academic success, your passion for education, your sharing qualities and attendance at the Southeast Missouri English Teacher Association's fall conference."
Cowan's nomination letter described the two foundational values of the campus -- academic rigor and caring relationships. He said Thieret embraced both values and adopted them as his own while working with students.
Thieret said his first year at the high school has been stressful and overwhelming at times, but he loves working with students and always wanted to be a teacher.
"I like teaching English, because I love to read and write, and I love to share that passion with students," he said.
At times, it can be a challenge to get students interested in reading and writing, he said. But by letting them choose their own books for reports and encouraging them to write about topics that are appealing to them, the students become more engaged in class.
Thieret will be presented with the award March 4 in Jefferson City during a conference, which includes roundtable discussions and workshop options.
"I think it'll be a really good experience and hopefully a learning experience, as well," he said.
