A Cape Girardeau attorney has been arrested for third-degree assault and tampering with a victim, the Cape Girardeau County prosecutor's office said.
William Z. Shohet, 31, of 813 Illinois, was arrested Wednesday for three counts of misdemeanor assault and two counts of victim tampering.
Shohet allegedly kicked, pushed and choked a woman who was staying at his apartment in July and August, and then tried to convince her not to file complaints with the police, probable cause affidavits say.
Some of the assaults were witnessed by neighbors, police said.
Shohet is currently on probation for possession of marijuana and driving while intoxicated, officer Chris Muench said in his affidavit. Shohet had previously pleaded guilty to two assaults.
Shohet is from Wisconsin, where he also has a criminal history.
A special prosecutor, Kevin Zoellner from the Missouri Attorney General's office, was appointed to handle Shohet's case.
He was arrested and held on $5,000 bond Wednesday.
