CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Capaha Arrow student newspaper at Southeast Missouri State University received eight awards in statewide Missouri College Newspaper Association competition. The awards included a first-place award for editorial writing.
The annual competition was held last week on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus.
Arrow adviser Dr. Roy Keller said he is especially proud that the newspaper captured awards in a variety of different categories.
"It showed we are strong in a variety of different skills," said Keller, "from writing to design to advertising."
The first-place editorial was written by Arrow editor Ron Eifert. It was called "Why Not Hold Faulkner-thon?'"
"It was a tongue-in-cheek recommendation that the university should hold a telethon-type of fund-raiser to help pay for the Faulkner collection," Keller said.
Other awards won were: second place in feature page design, Missy Livesay; second place in sports photography, David Armbruster; second place, best editorial, op-ed section, Ron Eifert; third place in page one design, Ron Eifert; third place in entertainment review, K.C. Martin; third place in advertising design, K.C. Martin; and third place, best overall newspaper.
The Arrow's class 3A competition, based on enrollment, included Washington University, Webster University, Northwest Missouri State University and Missouri Southern State College.
