Julie Levin, Rose Kemp and Jean Carnahan have received the Women Legislators of Missouri's annual DeVerne Lee Calloway Award during recent ceremony. The winners also received an engraved crystal vase.
DeVerne Lee Calloway, the first African-American woman to serve in the Missouri General Assembly, represented District 81 in St. Louis from 1963 to 1982. She won battles in the areas of civil rights and civil liberties.
Calloway also significantly advanced opportunities for all citizens in the areas of education, housing and employment. The DeVerne Lee Calloway Award is given "to a Missouri woman who, through her commitment and determination, as made major contributions to equality and social justice concerning equal opportunities for all Missourians in the areas of education, housing and employment."
Julie Levin was nominated by B. Janeen deVries of the Association for Women Lawyers. Levin is managing attorney of the central office of Legal Aid of Western Missouri in Kansas City where she has been employed for the 23 years.
Levin has dedicated her career to assisting low-income citizens in obtaining decent, fair housing and has been an advocate for pregnant women seeking unemployment benefits.
Rose Kemp was nominated by state Rep. Yvonne Wilson. Kemp was appointed regional administrator of the U.S. Department of Labor Women's Bureau on May 15, 1983.
Through dedicated her service, she is responsible for enhancing the status of working women. She has been honored with the Distinguished Career Service Award.
Jean Carnahan was nominated by Shirley Breeze of the Missouri Women's Network.
As Missouri's first woman U.S. senator, she has broken a barrier for all women in Missouri. As the state's first lady, she never feared voicing her opinion in matters concerning children's health and battered women.
In addition to the award presentation, the Women Legislators of Missouri chose to honor women doctors and health care administrators.
