Governor Pat Quinn today announced a $1.29 million contract for a road project near Cairo.

The project involves patching and resurfacing on 3.5 miles of Illinois 3/U.S. 51 from nine-tenths of a mile west of Interstate 57 to 34th Street in Cairo.

The project is part of Quinn's agenda to create jobs and drive Illinois' economy forward.

"This project will help traffic flow in Alexander County," Quinn said in a news release. "The project will also employ a number of construction workers, which will help the local economy."

E.T. Simonds Construction Co. of Carbondale submitted the lowest of two bids for the project, $1,293,726. The contract "addresses a critical infrastructure need while creating construction jobs," according to the news release. The Illinois Department of Transportation will manage the project.

"The Cairo resurfacing project will help put people to work, ease the road congestion that has plagued the area for some time now and provide safer roads for Illinois motorists," said State Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, in a news release.

This project is part of Quinn's $31 billion "Illinois Jobs Now!" program, the largest capital construction program in Illinois history.
