CAIRO, Ill. -- A Cairo man died and a passenger was injured in a one-vehicle accident Saturday morning, said Illinois State Police.
The driver, Sylvester Allen, 40, of Cairo, was taken to Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau by helicopter. He died at the hospital, said police.
A passenger in the vehicle, Harley Dean Jones, 13, of Cairo, received major injuries in the crash and was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau by helicopter.
A hospital spokesman said Saturday night that the youth was listed in satisfactory condition.
The accident occurred at 9 a.m. on U.S. 51, two miles south of Route 37.
Allen was driving a Suzuki Samari when he apparently lost control of the vehicle. It ran off the roadway and hit a tree, overturned and came to rest in the northbound lane of traffic.
