Burglary suspect arrested Friday at Cape motel

A Cape Girardeau man wanted for failure to appear on burglary, theft and property-damage charges was arrested early Friday evening.

David Rains, 35, was taken into custody without incident, SWAT commander Lt. John Davis said.

Narcotics officers received information Friday that Rains was at the Holiday Lodge Motel and Apartments at 1918 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau, Davis said. Officers arrived on the scene about 5:45 p.m., and Rains was arrested without a fight.

Police arrested Rains on May 29 after serving a search warrant at 1652 N. Main St. in connection with a burglary at a Cape Girardeau County home. Capt. David James of the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department said jewelry and a car were stolen from the home, and the vehicle was found on fire later that day.

Rains posted his $20,000 the next day and was released.

Rains missed his initial arraignment Tuesday. As a result, Judge Scott Thomsen ordered his bond be forfeited and issued the warrant for failure to appear; bond was set at $75,000 cash only.

Earlier this week, James said officers had received a tip Rains was seen at an apartment building at 115 N. Ellis St. and conducted a search for him Tuesday morning.

Before Rains was charged in the May 29 incident, he already faced charges of burglary, theft and stealing and property damage. He is set for a case review in connection with those charges July 6.

Davis said Rains was in custody at the Cape Girardeau County Jail.
