JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Efforts to attract more tourists to Missouri are getting an extra boost next year in the governor's proposed budget. Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder announced Thursday that Gov. Matt Blunt's budget recommendations would make the tourism budget -- at more than $20 million -- the largest ever if lawmakers accept it. The recommendations exceed the highest tourism budget, which is the current one, by $2.9 million. Blunt is to release his entire budget during his annual State of the State address Wednesday. Kinder, who also heads the tourism commission, said the additional funding likely would go toward marketing efforts and is needed to help Missouri compete with other states for visitors. Tourism officials say 38 million people come to Missouri annually, generating $1 billion.
Tourism Director Blaine Luetkemeyer said tourists spend $2.80 for every $1 spent by the state.
The state tourism division oversees efforts to promote Missouri and coordinates with more localized efforts to recruit visitors. Luetkemeyer said fewer people would visit Missouri without state efforts, hurting the economy.
