Firefighters from four departments battled a brush fire Friday afternoon near the Juden Creek Conservation Area.

Mark Hasheider, assistant chief of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department, said Jackson firefighters covered Cape Girardeau's stations while crews from Cape Girardeau, East County, Gordonville and Fruitland worked to contain the fire that broke out just after 3 p.m.

Crews still were putting out hot spots and trying to clear the scene at 6 p.m., Hasheider said.

"What made the fire a little bit more difficult was the terrain and the accessibility to the area," he said.

Hasheider said the fire started near Timon Way and spread into the woods, burning four or five acres, including part of the conservation area.

He did not know the cause of the fire Friday evening but said it did not appear suspicious.
