Broadway Theater listed on National Register

A downtown Cape Girardeau theater is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Broadway Theater, 805 Broadway, was placed on the register in June, according to a weekly release sent Thursday by the National Park Service, which oversees the register program.

Once hailed as "Cape Girardeau's leading entertainment spot," according to Southeast Missourian archives, the theater opened in 1921.

It is vacant and has been listed among the "Endangered Buildings" as identified by the city's Historic Preservation Commission.

Inclusion on the register is a "formal recognition of a property's historical, architectural or archeological significance based on national standards used by every state," according to the National Park Service.
