Paulo Bellinati, one of Brazil's most important contemporary guitarists, will perform March 11 in Cape Girardeau.
Bellinati will play his own compositions as well as arrangements by the famous Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Cape Girardeau will be his first stop in an American tour that will follow performances in Europe.
In 1998 he recorded the "Brazilian Guitar Virtuoso Video," on which he plays and talks about his compositions. He has performed with American jazz bassist Steve Swallow, pianist Carla Bley and Brazilian vocalists Gal Costa, Joao Bosco and Monica Salmaso.
Among his many recordings is "The Guitar Works of Garoto." His next recording will be titled "Jobim for Guitar."
John Williams recorded Bellinati's award-winning composition "JONGO" for his album "The Mantis and the Moon." Bellinati's work also has been recorded by the Assad Brothers, Carlos Barbos-Lima and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.
Bellinati's concert will be presented at 3 p.m. at Old St. Vincent's Church. Admission is $5 general, with discounts for seniors and students. Admission is free with a university I.D.
Bellinati also will present a master class for guitar students at 10 a.m. March 10 in Brandt Music Building. The class is free and open to the public. For information about the class, phone 651-2141.
