KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 12-year-old boy brought to a fire station by his mother after being injured in a drive-by shooting became Kansas City's 49th homicide victim of the year, as the city runs well ahead of the 2004 pace.

The boy was shot Wednesday evening as he stood outside a residence with a group of other people.

Police on Thursday identified him as Dominique Henderson.

Shots fired from a passing vehicle hit him and another person, who was not seriously injured.

The boy's mother and another person rushed him to a nearby fire station, where firefighters administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation for several minutes to no avail. A crowd that gathered across the street lingered for several hours, expressing grief and anger.

"We should all be incensed when something like this happens," said police Sgt. Tony Sanders, a department spokesman.

Police Chief Jim Corwin was among the many officers who went to the scene as authorities began investigating. Neighborhood residents said it was just the latest in a number of violent incidents in their area, including a shooting a few doors away several days ago.

At the same time last year, there had been 34 homicides in Kansas City.
