An unidentified boy was hit by a car shortly after the Jackson Veterans Day parade, according to Capt. Greg Hecht of the Jackson Fire Department.

The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. as the boy stepped onto Missouri Street near Madison Street, which was crowded with post-parade foot traffic, cars and buses waiting for band students, Hecht said.

Hecht said he could not confirm details about the boy's medical condition but said he was an elementary school student. Bystanders at the scene said the boy appeared to be talking. He was taken by ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center as a precaution, Hecht said.

The car that hit the boy was traveling slowly in the one lane open at the time, Hecht said. He said the woman driving was distraught at the scene but did not require medical attention. It is unclear whether Jackson police issued a ticket to the woman; calls to police officials were not returned.

Hecht said the boy was at the event with an older sibling who had played in one of the marching bands.

"It was just one of those things after a parade," Hecht said. "It's unfortunate that the lady who ended up hitting the small child was just on her way out, I assume at a slow rate of speed. He should have stopped and look both ways, but he's a kid, and unfortunately, kids don't always do what they're supposed to do."
