MARBLE HILL - A 2-year-old rural Bollinger County boy was fatally injured Friday night when he fell out of the family car and was run over.
Bollinger County Coroner Gene Ward identified the victim as Travis J. Crites, son of John and Heather Crites of Marble Hill Route 2.
Ward said the accident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. at the home of the boy's paternal grandparents, situated a short distance from the family home on Highway 34, six miles east of Marble Hill.
"According to the father, Travis was in the front seat of the car while the car was backing out of the driveway. When the father looked over, he saw the passenger-side door open and Travis gone," said Ward.
"The front tire ran over the boy's head, causing massive injuries. He died at 11:30 p.m. Friday at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau."
Ward said the father told him Travis had wanted the window down and that the boy apparently grabbed the door handle instead.
