MILLERSVILLE -- A boundary enlargement proposal of Public Water Supply District No. 2 of Cape Girardeau County will be submitted at Tuesday's primary election.

Registered voters living within the current and the proposed areas of change may vote on the question.

"The main boundary area to be extended is on Highway B to the north," said Wilda Peterman, clerk of the water district. "Also, there are a few other areas with wrong section numbers which should be corrected.

"For legal protection, we would like all of our lines to be within the proposed boundaries," Peterman said.

Peterman said the board of directors believes the issue is of great importance for future growth of the area. The board would like to correct several errors made in the original organization of the district, she said.

District No. 2 serves the western part of the county, mainly in the Millersville area and along Highway 72, Peterman said.

"Our water line goes over to the 34 junction," she said. "Extended for about five miles, the line serves 347 customers."

In a recent study completed by the Southeast Missouri Regional Planning and Economic Development Commission, part of the present facilities were found to be outside of current boundaries and areas intended to be included were not, Peterman said.

"The commission discovered that one piece of our water line on Highway B wasn't included in our present boundary," she said. "They mapped out the areas where the most growth would be occurring.

"Also, section number errors were discovered, which we would like to correct."

She said the proposal deals primarily with the question of whether the boundaries should be adjusted, and, if approved, would allow future growth in those areas that desire service.

"The issue will not increase taxes or raise water rates for the citizens," Peterman said, "nor will it require anyone to connect to the system."

The board of directors meets on the third Thursday of each month. Anyone interested in requesting water service can meet with the board, she said.
