Bollinger County voters clearly conveyed they are not willing to pay higher taxes to get a new library.

Bollinger County voters rejected the proposed new building 1,437 to 317 -- nearly 82 percent.

The Bollinger County Library Board and library director Eva Dunn tried to convince voters that the 66-year-old library in Marble Hill needed to be replaced and moved out of its flood-prone location near Crooked Creek. Supporters presented a scaled-back version of the first proposal, which included the Bollinger County Archive and the University of Missouri Extension Center -- knocking off about a third of the first proposed building. The extension and archive will move into what is now city hall, once the city moves out.

"I'm very, very disappointed," Dunn said. "It's a loss not just for us, but for the county."

Whatever the library board's next step will be, it won't be taken in this election year. Dunn said that she believes people did not support the library because of other county issues, namely the condition of county roads.
