Bollinger County puts road tax on April ballot

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Two weeks into the filing period for the April 5 municipal election, the only item so far on the proposed ballot is a half-cent road and bridge tax for Bollinger County.

The Bollinger County Commissioners voted last week to put the sales tax on the ballot to raise money to improve and maintain Bollinger County roads.

Presiding Commissioner Travis Elfrink said the county estimates the tax, if approved, will bring in $300,000 in revenue.

No one has filed to run for alderman in Marble Hill's first and second wards or to run for mayor. The current aldermen, Beverly Johnson in Ward 2 and Deborah Acup in Ward 1, have said they do not intend to seek re-election. Mayor Nick Hendricks also said he does not intend to run again.

On Monday night, the Marble Hill Board of Aldermen voted to pay all aldermen and the mayor $25 for attending each of two regularly scheduled monthly meetings in the hope it will entice more people to consider serving.

"This might pull more people in," said Acup, who introduced the motion. "They will not get rich from it, but we are one of the few cities that does not pay its aldermen or mayor."

Paying the mayor and aldermen will begin with the next budget year, beginning July 1. Payment will not be made for missed meetings or for special meetings.

The deadline to file for any office open in the April election is Jan. 19.
