The blues will be available near and far this weekend, with a small festival scheduled in Murphysboro, Ill., and a big one in Kansas City.

Lonnie Brooks will headline the sixth annual Riverside Blues Festival Saturday on the banks of the Big Muddy River at Riverside Park in Murphysboro.

Emerging from Chicago, Brooks combines rock 'n' roll, R&B, Cajun boogie, country twang and hard Chicago blues. His live performances are known for kick-starting a party.

Gates will open at noon with music beginning at 1 p.m. No pets or glass bottles will be allowed.

The line-up is:

-- 1 p.m., The Bruce Brothers

-- 2:15 p.m., St. Stephen's Blues

-- 3:30 p.m., Steve Pecaro and the Tone Kings

-- 4:45 p.m., The Southern Illinois All-Stars

-- 6:30 p.m., Big Mike Griffin

-- 8:15 p.m., Lonnie Brooks.

In Kansas City, the Kansas City Blues & Jazz Festival opens Friday and continues on three stages through Sunday. More than 40 artists will appear on the grounds of the Liberty Memorial in Penn Valley Park near downtown Kansas City.

The event draws more than 100,000 people annually.

On the blues stage, the biggest names include Luther Allison, Johnny Copeland, Etta James & the Roots Band, the James Harman Band and Bobby Rush.

At the jazz stage the headliners include George Benson, Jimmy Smith, the Yellowjackets and the Dirty Dozen.

The Heritage Tent will offer a number of jazz and blues bands from the Kansas City community.

George Benson, Luther Allison and Tower of Power will appear on Friday.

Jimmy Smith, Etta James & the Roots Band, Jerry Gonzales & the Fort Apache Band, and Jay McShann & the Duke Robillard Band will play Saturday.

On Sunday the headliners are Dity Dozen, The Yellowjackets, the James Harman Band and Bobby Rush.

The festival also will present the world's largest Bar-B-Que Pit Contest in which Kansas City companies vie to cook the best ribs in town.
