Two St. Louis physicians who are experts in preparation of blood and blood products for transfusion will speak at a Blood Banking Symposium here today.
Sponsored by Southeast Missouri Hospital, Heart of America Association of Blood Banks and Baxter Diagnostics Inc., the dinner meeting will be from 6-9 p.m. in Southeast's Harrison Room.
The meeting, intended for blood bank supervisors and personnel, will include participants from St. Louis, Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri.
At the meeting, Dr. Marilyn Johnston, blood bank medical director at St. Louis University Hospital, will discuss "Blood Component Therapy in the '90s." A focus of her talk will be single donor platelets.
Dr. Hugh Chaplin, professor emeritus at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, will center his talk on blood filtration technologies. Of particular interest will be Chaplin's discussion on new filters used with blood transfusions.
Giving the welcome for the meeting will be Patrick Lee, laboratory manager at Barnes Hospital and president of the Heart of America Association of Blood Banks.
