Southwestern Bell Telephone Co.'s new Cape Girardeau telephone directory was unveiled at a news conference at West Park Mall Thursday.
The cover of the directory features the city's official Bicentennial seal.
Also introduced during the unveiling was Project ReDirectory, a program urging people to recycle outdated telephone books.
"This is an exciting event," said Craig Felzien, area manager for Southwestern Bell. "Public officials, school children and others are here taking an active part in the presentation, designed to honor our city's heritage while challenging each citizen to do his or her part for the future by recycling, not trashing, their old phone books.
State Rep. Mary Kasten issued a direct challenge to Cape Girardeans "to recycle over 10 tons of directories, or 25,000 books."
Each year a total of 47,000 tons of directories 95,250 books, are distributed in the Cape Girardeau area, which includes Jackson, Scott City, Illmo, Kelso, Commerce, New Wells, Pocahontas, Oak Ridge, Altenberg, Farrar and Frohna.
"We've had great success in other cities with the ReDirectory effort," said Tom Mulligan, Project ReDirectory coordinator.
