After Tuesday’s damaging storms, the Better Business Bureau issued a list of reminders for those looking to hire contractors to repair storm damage.
The BBB recommends:
- Watch out for door-to-door salespeople using high-pressure sales tactics.
- Insurance carriers should be consulted before major repairs. Adjusters may need to assess damage, and carriers typically have recommendations for repairs or contractors.
- Determine specifications, materials and labor needed for a project, and seek at least three bids from prospective contractors based on the same information.
- Ask whether a company is insured against claims covering workers’ compensation, property damage and personal liability. Get the name of the insurance carrier and call to verify coverage.
- Does the contractor meet licensing and bonding requirements set by the state, county, city?
- Are permits needed? Find out before proceeding with the work.
- Will the contractor provide a lien waiver upon completion? This is a statement by the contractor all suppliers and subcontractors have been paid.
- Read and understand the contract before signing. Any verbal promises should be made in writing as well. Include start and completion dates.
- Remember the rule of thirds: Pay one-third at hire, one-third at 50 percent completion and one-third after completion.
