"We must always pay our respects to those who have fought for freedom and defended democracy," said U.s. Rep. Bill Emerson, R-Cape Girardeau. "I would hope that communities in southern Missouri and across the state would join our fellow Americans from coast-to-coast in this solemn, yet fitting salute to the end of World War II."

Participating communities are asked to adapt the following program: Begin with a moment of silence followed by the playing of "Taps" and the ringing of bells at 11 a.m.

"The ringing of bells will hopefully signify future peace and freedom for Americans and the world's hope that World War II will become known as the last world war," Emerson said.
