The ninth annual Cape BBQ Fest will be held today and Saturday at Arena Park.

Teams will compete in the categories of hamburgers, beef kebabs, beef boneless strip steaks, roast pork, pork steaks and pork ribs.

The first-place team in each category will win $100. Second-place finishers will get $75 while third-place teams will get $50.

The grand champion of the event will receive a trophy and a $250 prize. To be eligible for the honor, teams must compete in four categories.

A showmanship competition will be held from 7 to 9 tonight, the first night of the event. Showmanship consists of entertainment presented by participating teams to amuse the public through skits, decorations, costumes, enthusiasm and crowd participation.

Games and other contests will begin at 6 p.m. and last until about 10:15, including a water-balloon toss, kiddie tractor pull, a pitching game, soccer kick and a bean-bag toss.

The event is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce.
